Girls bag prize

Six girl students of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School in Thanjavur, have won the second prize for their project on ‘Synthesis of bio-fuel from waste carbohydrates’ displayed at the three-day technology exhibition conducted by the Periyar Maniammai University, Vallm, Thanjavur, from October 2 to 4. Former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who inaugurated the exhibition on Gandhi Jayanthi Day appreciated the students for the project. N. Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Periyar Maniammai University, who distributed a cash prize of Rs.5,000 and certificates to the students - K.Rajarathi, R.Nivedhitha, A.L..Lakshmi, N.Ramya, K.Karpaga Priya, and N.Vaishnavi, said that the students had explained in their project that bio-ethanol obtained from waste carbohydrate material through fermentation process could be used as fuel for running vehicles and this is one of the best alternatives for fossil fuel.

Gandhi remembered

Karuna Club and NSS unit of Shri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, celebrated the Gandhi Jayanthi and the 33rd anniversary of the school recently. Headmaster G. Jayasankar garlanded the statue of Gandhi at the Municipal Office and recalled the sacrifices made by Gandhi to free the country from the British. He administered untouchability eradication and communal harmony pledge to students. Assistant Headmaster R. Parimala and senior Tamil teache r T. Balasubramanian said Gandhi was a role model to all and students should follow his footsteps. The students distributed pamphlets to stress the importance of protecting natural resources and repercussions of using tobacco.

Special camp

NSS volunteers of Vairams Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, participated in a ten-day special camp at Kadaiyakudi village recently. They repaired roads, cleaned streets and surroundings in the morning and organised programmes for creating awareness of social issues in the evenings. The NSS unit in association with the Sri Krishna Hospital conducted a free eye camp. A team of doctors led by Subbaraman screened the local people. NSS Programme Officer A. Kris hnagiri offered felicitations.

Bicycles distributed

Free cycles provided by the government were distributed to students of Santhaipettai Government Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, recently. President of Parent-Teachers’ Association of the school M. Muthusrinivasan handed over the cycles to the students belonging to the backward, most backward, SC and ST. Headmistress of the school K. Lalitha presided. Senior teachers Krishnaveni and Radhika explained various government schemes for the benefit of students.

NSS’ role hailed

NSS volunteers of Crescent Higher Secondary School, Avaniapuram, near Aduthurai in Thanjavur district, participated in a special camp at Ambalavanar Desikar High School, Thiruvidaimaruthur. T. Senthilkumar presided. President of the Tiruvidaimarthur village panchayat R. Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the ten-day camp by planting a sapling inside the Ambalavanar school premises. Headmaster of Crescent HSS A. Shahul Hameed, secretary of Rotary Club D. Veeramuthu and Exnora secre tary R. Tamilarasan explained the role played by NSS volunteers in the overall development of villages.

Tamil Pandit V. Sasikumar, NSS Programme Officer S. Mohamed Iliyas presented programmes planned during the camp period.
