Julie Joseph’s joy knows no bounds

Principal Correspondent

PALA: Julie Joseph must have been a very disappointed girl last year. Event after event, she watched painfully as St. Thomas College’s Soumya Joseph walked away with the gold medals at the Mahatma Gandhi University swimming championship.

“Soumya won almost all the golds last year, 12 of the 14 at stake,” said Julie after winning her maiden gold in the MGU championship at the St Thomas College pool here on Monday evening.

A change of rules, which allowed a swimmer to compete in a maximum of four individual events this year, helped Julie’s cause in a big way this time.

And when she emerged from the pool, Julie was thrilled to hear that she had also broken Soumya’s meet record in the 50m breast stroke. “That was a surprise…my first gold, with a record!," said the 19-year-old, a second year BA student of St. George College, Aruvithura. "I had been away from swimming for nearly three months because of a surgery. I came back just a week ago.”

Three meet records fell on the opening day with Jijo Joseph of St. Joseph’s College of Physical Education setting one in the 50m butterfly and St. Aloysius’ M. Midhun (50m breaststroke) accounting for the other two. Dr. Mathew Kokkad, Principal, St. Thomas College, inaugurated the two-day championship.
