SALEM: Inspector General (IG) of Police N. Chenbaharaman took charge as Salem city’s new Police Commissioner on Monday.

Immediately after assuming the office, Mr. Chenbaharaman told the media that the city police apart from maintaining law and order and traffic, would adopt a humane approach within the precincts of law to issues related to human rights violations, violence against women and disadvantaged groups.

Detailed programme

Unveiling a detailed programme, the Commissioner, who was the DIG for Salem Range till recently, said the city police would henceforth take up the cases that were referred to them by various commissions of human rights, women and minorities too.

The cases registered under the provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities Act) 1986 would be studied and necessary action would be initiated.

Cases related to harassment of women, institutional and domestic violence would be undertaken with the help of the officials of Social Welfare Department and Education Department.

The complete update of the list on history-sheeters and habitual offenders would be undertaken. After scrutinising the list, those who had become old and remained “inactive”, would be removed from the list.

Those who were active would be detained under the preventive sections. Coordination between the Bar and the police and judicial officers also would be mooted.

A special squad would be formed to nab the policemen who were found demanding bribes during Deepavali season.

Unlicensed firecracker sellers would not be allowed while periodical check would be conducted in the godowns that housed explosive materials.

City Vigilance Committees in each ward would be set up and all outposts would be activated.

He said he had prepared an exhaustive plan to regulate the chaotic traffic in the city with a number of initiatives such as traffic awareness programmes, median erections, new road signals, rountanas, zebra crossings, road safety patrols and traffic wardens, etc.

Drive against drunken driving would be strictly adhered to.

“I will be happy even if the number of road accidents comes down due to our deterrent action,” he said.

The haphazard parking on road margins and in front of shopping malls and complexes would be severely dealt with.

K. Vannia Perumal, who was the Commissioner of Police, took charge as Salem DIG on Monday.
