SSP launches tailoring training for women

SALEM: Salem Steel Plant (SSP), as part of its corporate social responsibility, launched a unique scheme of tailoring training for women in Tirumalaigiri village, near here, which has been adopted by the plant as its ‘Model Steel Village.’

Empowering

The scheme, according to a communiqué from the plant, was aimed at empowering women of BPL families to improve their economic condition by equipping them for self-employment and for employment in garment making industries in and around Salem.

The women, who were either unemployed or engaged in daily wages, were selected and trained for about six months in two stages at a cost of Rs.4.5 lakh.

Under the Stage-I training, completed in December 2007, 84 women were given training to meet the requirement of the practical work situation and equip them with skills to work on garments required by the village folk.

Technical skills

Under the Stage-II, 52 of the 84 women had been selected and given advanced training in technical skills in garment making besides imparting entrepreneurial skills.

Further, these women were trained in supervisory skills and quality control in apparel production. In order to boost their confidence level, industrial visits were also organised.

The Centre for Non-formal and Vocational Education of Sona College of Technology, Salem, imparted the training.

In a function organised on Gandhi Jayanthi Day (October 2) in Tirumalaigiri, SSP’s Executive Director B B Singh distributed certificates to the 52 women.

Twenty six women of the 52 had also been given employment offers by the Chief Executive of M/s Meenakshi Garments (India) Private Limited, Salem, in the same function.

Thirteen had opted for self-employment in their village and seven had got inspired to pursue higher education in fashion designing and garment making.

Facilities

Mr. Singh also inaugurated two overhead water tanks at Rs. 25.80 lakh, which will cater to the entire village.

So far, Rs.1 crore has been spent in Tirumalaigiri towards providing educational facilities, roads connectivity, water supply, drainages for improving the sanitation, street lighting, medical camps, HIV/AIDS awareness campaign etc.

Works worth around Rs. 41 lakh are under progress, which are likely to be completed by December 2008.
