HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Monday approved the proposal of AP Genco to establish the first nuclear power plant of 2 X 1000 MW, either at Kadapa or Srikakulam. A press release issued by the Chief Minister’s office said that Andhra Pradesh had the advantage of availability of uranium in Kadapa, location of Nuclear Fuel Complex in Hyderabad, a heavy water plant at Manuguru, easy availability of land and water besides a coastline.

The Chief Minister expressed happiness over the progress of the Indo-US nuclear deal and hoped that the nuclear power plant would come up in the State, as envisaged. Dr. Reddy also announced that AP Genco would establish an ultra mega thermal power project of 4,000 MW capacity, 4 km from Voderevu Port in Prakasam district.

The Chief Minister has also asked Genco to go in for additional coal import.
