‘End atrocities on Sri Lankan Tamils’

Special Correspondent

Despite Centre taking up the issue, attacks on Tamils are continuing: Thangkabalu

Condemns Jayalalithaa’s comments against Dr. Singh

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take immediate steps to stop atrocities on Sri Lankan Tamils by the island government and “attacks on Indian fishermen” by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Addressing reporters here on Monday, Mr. Thangkabalu said despite the Centre taking up the issue with the Sri Lankan government, attacks on Tamils were continuing. It was the Centre’s duty to protect the Tamils when they were being persecuted. It could not remain a mute spectator when there were reports that Sri Lanka was getting heavy arms from other countries.

Stating that the Congress had always stepped in to protect the Sri Lankan Tamils, Mr. Thangkabalu said whenever the party was in power at the Centre, it took steps to protect their lives and to bring peace on the island. He listed steps taken by former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and the present government.

The TNCC president condemned All-India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa for her comments against Dr. Singh and said she had no locus standi to criticise him.
