Overflowing misery: Residents of Balaji Nagar in Salem are often forced to stay indoors due to frequent clogging of sewage channels.

SALEM: The residents of Balaji Nagar, particularly those living at Second Cross Street in Ward 35 are facing a serious sanitation problem.

The frequent chocking of sewage channels here inundate the street forcing the residents to stay indoors still it drains out. A brief spell of rain further aggravates the problem.

The residents claim that the ankle deep drainage water causes severe health problems.

The outbreak of diseases especially among the children and spread of contagious diseases caused by mosquitoes are common health issues which the population here is facing.

“Whenever the channels get clogged, we inform the officials of Salem Corporation. They come and redress the problem. But a permanent solution to the frequent problem needs to be found,” says a resident.

Despite our reminders, the civic body is yet to react, they point out.

The residents also claim that plastic waste is the major cause for chocking. Periodical cleaning and desilting will enable the free flow of water in the drainage channels, they say and insist that the Corporation should regularly attend to these works of public importance.
