Call to bring more fallow land under cultivation Subsidy for seed, mechanisation sought PALAKKAD: Consultant for the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) D.N. Singh has said that more funds will be made available for taking up paddy cultivation under the NFSM in the district. Dr. Singh, who visited two project areas of the NFSM in the district on Sunday, said though only Rs.1.88 crore was released initially, additional funds would be made available to take up paddy cultivation in more areas. He said more fund could be made available for innovative farming practices. The project could also be integrated with the ongoing schemes in various panchayats. Mechanised planting with transplants along with line planting by workers could be implemented under the scheme. More fallow land should be brought under paddy cultivation, he suggested. Agriculture Department officials and the District Collector discussed with the consultant various problems in connection with the food security scheme. They demanded more subsidy for seed, mechanisation and lime supply. They also wanted to take up additional crops like marigold in paddy fields and other fringe crops.
