Thrissur: Need for a rental housing scheme for employees, especially women, working in unorganised sector was highlighted at a seminar held here on Monday in connection with World Habitat Day. The women, most of them coming from far off places, work till late hours. A major part of the workers’ salary was spent for travel expenses, the seminar pointed out. Another neglected community was 1 lakh-strong migrant population in the district, mainly from the States of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar, working in construction and jewellery sector. These labourers were living in unhygienic conditions that made them vulnerable to many diseases. Their basic needs such housing and sanitation facilities should be taken care of, the speakers said. As the amount of Rs.50,000, which has been given under the E.M.S. Housing Scheme was inadequate , the seminar demanded the government to distribute construction materials at a subsidised rate .
