Hearing on atrocities against Dalits

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: The Dalit Social Audit Forum has alleged that the atrocities and discrimination against the Dalits are rampant in Tamil Nadu, and the authorities are either ignorant or negligent of the problems.

From the 132 case studies conducted last year, it has been established that the Dalits are the victims of brutal attacks, rape, murder, denial of their right to enter temples, death due to negligence, police atrocities and the double tumbler system prevalent at various places. So, the forum will conduct a public hearing on these cases at the ICSA Centre, Pantheon Road, Chennai, on October 10, according to V.A. Rameshnathan, Director, Social Awareness Society for Youths. In a statement released here, Mr. Rameshnathan said the forum was set up under the aegis of the European Initiative, Democracy and Human Rights. The jury would include D .Ravikumar, MLA of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi; Prof. Kalyani; Ossie Fernandez, Director, Human Rights Federation; Geetha, an advocate of the Madras High Court; Anbuselvan of the Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary; Parthasarathy, director of the National Project on Prevention of Torture; and Ravichandran of the Human Rights Federation for Dalit Liberation.
