Tuticorin: Collector R. Palaniayandi has announced a package of measures for the tsunami affected people here on Monday. He said that projects on building infrastructure for the tsunami hit people would be carried out under the Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Project. The people living in the coastal areas were entitled to the housing with the measurement of up to 200 meters of High Tide Land (HTL). The government has approved 816 new habitats to the tune of Rs. 2.38 lakh. It has also been divided into four packages. Government tenders have been floated to this effect and the approval has been made. Also documents on possession of lands have been issued to 32 persons out of 95 houses by the Revenue authorities. The construction work of the scheme is under progress. The Collector told The Hindu that the people living in the coastal area of within the radius of 0 – 200 meters would come under the housing scheme of Rajiv Gandhi Rehabilitation Project. The housing scheme would be extended to people in Tuticorin with 1425 houses, Kayalpatinam municipality with 224 houses and Tiruchendur town panchayat with 256 houses. Above all, the total number of houses to be constructed in the current financial year is 1905 with an estimated cost of Rs.2.38 lakh.
