CHENNAI: Pugs, Miniature Pinschers, Dalmatians, Labradors and several kinds of dogs had their day at the Madras Canine Club’s 86th and 87th championship shows held here on Sunday. Owners and trainers brushed the dogs’ coats to a shine and showed them off for judges and visitors at the show. A large number of children came to the show with their parents to pet the dogs or just admire them from afar. Yasko, a German Shepherd, was the star of the shows. He won both the ‘best in show’ trophies and both the ‘best in show, bred in India’ awards. The 18-month old dog is from Wolfenhaus kennels in Bangalore. The judges for the show were N. Radhakrishnan and Mukul Vaid. Letika Saran, Additional Director General of Police (Administration), gave away the prizes to the owners and trainers. A dog-lover herself, Ms. Saran said that she was considering buying two whippet pups. She already owns two dachshunds. Jogi alias Bheem, a St. Bernard stood tall, strong and solemn among all, belying the fact that he was just eight months old. He was the only entrant in the St. Bernard category. He belongs to Arun Prasanna, a resident of T. Nagar. “Bheem needs air-conditioning 24/7, so he has a room to himself,” Mr. Prasanna said. Compared to the St. Bernard, the toy breeds of Pug, Chihuahua and Miniature Pinscher looked small but packed quite a punch. A pug named ‘Quest for Gold’ won the second place in both shows. Pepper, a Toy Pomeranian, won the hearts of the children at the show. Designer Erum Ali brought Coco Chanel, an Irish Setter, and Dude, a Labrador, for their first dog show. Her son Aymaan, a student of class three, said he woke at five every morning to play with the dogs. Actor Naren, his wife Manju and trainer Suresh Chandra showed off their Chihuahua. Kalaivani of Kalaivani Kennels had come with two Great Danes, three Dalmations and an Irish Setter. All of them won prizes in various categories.
