Students win several contests

PUDUCHERRY: Students of Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School won several prizes in a number of competitions including sports events.

A student of Class IX, Abilash was selected by the Education Department of Puducherry to take part in the National Science seminar held last week.

He came second in the all-India level competition and received a cash prize of Rs.12,000.

His guide and teacher, P.A. Vincent Raj was awarded a silver medal.

Of the ten junior air wing division cadets who attended the IGC preparatory camp at National Cadet Corps group headquarters in Puducherry, five students were from Petit Seminaire Higher Secondary School.

Students of Class IX, Sankaranarayanan, Sarathikrishnan and students of Standard VIII Simon Jude, Vishwas and Sriram underwent the training.

Two NCC air wing cadets, Sankaranarayanan of Class IX and M. Sriram of Class VIII took part in the IGC subject camp held at Pudukottai from September 5 to 14.

A student of Class IX, M. Kathirvel won the first prize in the under-13 boys category at the 21st SPIC open rating chess tournament held from September 25 to October 1 by the SPIC central sports council and Tuticorin district chess association.

M. Kathirvel of Class IX and S. Sivanesan of Class VIII won the first and third prizes respectively in the State-level chess tournament organised by Puducherry JCI midtown chess club.

Kathirvel would be representing Puducherry at the National-level tournament to be held at Aurangabad.

L. Rajesh Kumar of Standard VI received a consolation prize from the Puducherry chess players’ welfare club.

At the Inter-club skating tournament held on October 2 conducted by Puducherry team topper skating club, A. Vijayakumar of Class X won the first prize in ring I and second prize in road I. In the inline skating, D. S. Venkata Pradap of Class X won the first place in ring I and first prize in road I.

The Rozarian table tennis club conducted the 12th State-level ranking table tennis tournament from October 3 to 5. N. Akash Kanna of Class IV emerged as winner in mini cadet boys level and V. Sudarsanane of Class VI won the cadet boys level as well as in non-medallist singles. N.Sakthivel emerged as winner in the sub-junior boys level while K. Lokesh came as runner-up. R. Vijay Krishnan of Class X came first in both junior boys level and in men’s singles. MRF Foundation has come forward to award a scholarship for R. Vijay Krishnan for the academic years 2009-2010 and 2010-2011.

NVS Ramani of Class XII was the runner up in non-medallist singles and D. Amber Bansel of Class XII came as runner up in the men’s singles.

The second Tamil Nadu and Puducherry kick boxing championship-2008 was organised under the auspices of Tamil Nadu Kick Boxing Association. Jaya Suriya of Class VI won the gold medal in below 30-kg category and Thenmozhi Devan of Class VII won the silver medal in 40 to 45 kg category.

Thirty students of Class XI went on a four-day tour to Kanyakumari, Courtalam and Papanasam. Around 160 students of Class IX went on a tour to Kerala and 100 students of Class VIII went on a trip to Ooty. Principal of the school Fr. M.S. John Bosco congratulated all prize winners.
