Pradeep bags award

The highly rated contemporary footballer, N.P. Pradeep, was honoured by the Kerala Sports Persons Association (KESPA) with its first V.P. Sathyan Award here on Sunday.

Pradeep, whose goal helped India win the Nehru Cup in New Delhi last year for the first time, received a trophy, a certificate of honour and Rs 10,000 cash prize.

The award for the ‘Most promising sportsperson’ was instituted this year in the name of the former Indian football skipper, who died in tragic circumstances over two years ago.

Kerala lad Pradeep’s story is one of rags to riches, similar to that of his illustrious predecessor I.M. Vijayan.

Football has given him security and the former India under-23 captain at the Asian Games in Doha is now a regular member of the Indian team. He is a professional player with Mahindra United in the National Football League. The award was presented to him at the KESPA’s Onam Day celebrations, which was presided over by the Hindustan University Chancellor Elizabeth Verghese.

Also present were the KESPA patrons W.I. Davaram and Joseph Dominic. KESPA President Shiny Wilson and Secretary Sebastian Xavier were at hand to welcome and propose a vote of thanks.
