Aerogrammes of better quality needed

In India, aerogrammes are made of cheap recycled paper. They are flimsy, brittle and do not have the tensile strength to withstand handling by machines used for sorting mail in foreign countries. They look shabby in comparison to the aerogrammes available in the UK and the USA, or, for that matter, any other foreign country. Our aerogrammes are received there in torn condition. Postal authorities in the UK and the USA take pains to gather the torn and mangled pieces, put them in plastic enevelopes and attach a covering letter tendering an apology to the addressees. I received over half a dozen letters from my students settled abroad that they feel ashamed of the Indian aerogrammes. It needs no special mention that it would certainly tarnish the image of India in foreign countries. The postal authorities are requested to look into the issue.

Encourage low-budget films

The issue of big-budget commercial films vis-À-vis low-budget movies has come to the fore again with the State Government scrapping the provision of hiking the ticket price for big budget movies for the first couple of weeks. In my opinion, ticket price does not have any impact on the success of low-budget movies. But, the skyrocketing rents of cinema halls are deciding their fate . As the exhibitors collect rent on a weekly basis, producers and distributors of low-budget movies are unable to run the movies , unless collections are good from the first week itself. Many good films are not reaching a large section of audience because they are not being screened long enough in theatres for people know about them . Government has to take necessary steps to encourage low-budget movies.

Air-horn menace

Fixing air-horns, which cause noise pollution, to motorcycles seems to have become a fashion for city youth. Some youngsters are taking pride in honking the horns in busy junctions and creating confusion for others . Due to these horns, many people are mistaking the motorcycles for heavy vehicles. Though there is a ban on use of high decibel horns on city roads, many youngsters are violating it. Air-horns are disturbing people during the night too. I request the Commissioner of Police to look into the issue and levy fines on those using such horns.

Blame parents too

Besides the Government officials, the parents too are responsible for the tragedy at Narayana junior college on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The parents have to be blamed for not taking proper precautions and proper verification while admitting their children in private educational institutions. Most of the parents are depending on advertisements to select an institution for their wards. The ‘Narayana’ incident taught many lessons to parents and henceforth they have to enquire about the condition of the building, approval of building plan, recognition given by the Government and quality of food being served in a particular institution.
