JAIPUR: Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria laid the foundation stone for a new police headquarters here over the week-end. The new building will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.77.37 crore and completed by March 2011. The State police headquarters at present functions in a cramped building provided by the erstwhile royal family near Bari Chaupar in the Walled City here. The need for bigger premises with an easy approach was being felt for quite some time. Mr. Kataria said the State police had made a significant progress in the disposal of pending cases, recovery of weapons and conviction of the accused. The case officer scheme had also made a salutary impact on the disposal of cases, he added. The Minister praised the police force for cracking the May 13 Jaipur serial blasts case by arresting the culprits, solving several bank robbery cases and “peacefully handling” the Gujjar agitation. Director General of Police K.S. Bains said the police headquarter, to be constructed at a prime location on Tonk Road, would have modern facilities for parking, control room, record room, library and offices for accommodating 1,700 police officials. The building will also have a helipad on its roof. The Rajasthan State Road Development and Construction Corporation will construct the building in an area measuring 5.80 lakh sq. feet with the emphasis on aesthetic designing, energy conservation and pollution control.
