Withdraw notification for evictions: Krishna Iyer

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The former judge of the Supreme Court V.R. Krishna Iyer wrote to Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Sunday demanding withdrawal of the notification for eviction of large number of people for the Vizhinjam International Transhipment Project.

Mr. Iyer noted in his letter that 1,098 hectares had been notified for eviction. This would mean eviction of about 6,000 families. Even if only 227 families were to be evicted as had been stated by the Chief Minister, it should be done only after making arrangements for their rehabilitation. “All moves for evictions without completing arrangements for rehabilitation should be abandoned.”

While development was welcome, it would cause more harm than good if development caused loss of habitat and hardships to a section of the populace, he added.
