Command area development scheme to continue

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI:The Union Cabinet on Friday gave its nod for continuing the Command Area Development and Water Management (CADWM) Programme during the remaining period of the 11th Plan, till 2011-12, with an outlay of Rs. 1600 crore. It also approved enhancement of the cost norms to meet the escalated cost of labour and materials for various projects.

At the same time, the Cabinet allowed withdrawal of the component of renovation and desilting of minor irrigation tanks from the CADWM Programme to avoid overlap of similar works under the “Repair, Renovation and Restoration of Waterbodies” programme of the Water Resources Ministry.

Under the CADWM plan, central assistance would be provided for development of infrastructure to facilitate use of the sprinkler and drip irrigation systems as an alternative to construction of field channels.
