Reassuring sight: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy inspecting the Jurala project in Mahabubnagar district on Sunday.

MAHABUBNAGAR: Two of the six units of the 234 MW Jurala hydro-electric project across the Krishna were dedicated to the nation on Sunday by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy amidst festive atmosphere. He unveiled a pylon and pressed a button, synchronising the units, each of 39 MW capacity with the grid, assuring to end power shortage in the State from December. Nearly 2,000 MW capacity which was kept idle for want of gas, could be activated with Reliance gas.

Dr. Reddy promised to continue free power to farm pump sets, whatever the cost. Steps were taken to ensure the supply in Rabi when the demand was expected to reach 210 million units (mu) a day.

Jurala, the 18th hydro-electric project of APGenco, will push up the State capacity to 12,350 MW and Genco’s hydel capacity to 3,878 MW, offering 404 mu annually at Rs. 2.18 a unit. It will greatly improve voltage level in Mahabubnagar and Kurnool districts, which account for large pumpsets. He laid the foundation for 240 MW Lower Jurala Hydel Station at Gundala.

Interacting with media, he blamed the TDP government for the power shortage, referring to how agreements were signed with private developers to set up gas-based projects without gas availability. The Chief Minister later told a public meeting at Ter Maidan in Gadwal that the government initiatives to empower farmers and the poor deserved support. The initiatives had stopped people’s migration and contained drought. Turning to some youth who raised the SC categorisation issue, Dr. Reddy asked them not to fear as the Centre’s response to his proposal had reached a final stage. Dr. Reddy took part in a road show in Amarachinta, unveiled two statues of Indira Gandhi and one of Pandit Nehru in villages. He launched schemes, laid foundations for new ones and distributed assets to beneficiaries worth Rs 131.15 crore.
