Karnataka won’t be allowed to become a haven for terrorists: Yeddyurappa

Steps taken to modernise the police force

in the State

HUBLI: In the wake of increasing number of students with terror links being arrested in the State, the Government has decided to take steps to make campuses of educational institutions “terror free.”

Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa said with student organisations, especially banned outfits like SIMI, making use of educated youth for their ends, college campuses were becoming a base for terror activities and also for the activities of sympathisers of such organisations.

“It had become essential to keep an eye on the activities in school and college campuses, and the Government will take stringent steps to ensure that campuses are terror-free,” he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the State Government would not allow Karnataka to become a haven for terrorists.

He said the Government had already taken steps to modernise the Police Department.

Modern technology would be used to make surveillance more effective.

The Chief Minister said he would shortly convene a meeting of top officials of the Police Department and steps would be taken to ensure that peace was not disturbed in the State. “Apart from development, it is essential that the State remains safe,” he said.

To a question, he said funds were being released for the modernisation of the police force and additional funds would be made available in a phased manner.

On the growing needs of Hubli-Dharwad, Mr. Yeddyurappa said assistance would be provided for strengthening the police in the twin cities.
