Bangladeshi arrested for theft of mobile phones

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: A special team of the Chennai Police on Friday arrested notorious thief R. Sheikh Akthar Hussain of Bangladesh, involved in a series of mobile phone theft cases, said Commissioner of Police R. Sekar.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he said the team was formed following many thefts of mobile phones, including those from shops. Following specific clues, the team went to Sahibganj district, Jharkhand, and arrested Hussain. He was produced in a local court and is being brought here.

Mr. Sekar said that a team had been sent to Madhya Pradesh to nab Jugnu, who kidnapped and killed a two-year-old boy of Sowcarpet here on September 26. On the ban on smoking in public places, he said the police were creating awareness among people. “We have advised police personnel to desist from smoking and set an example to others.” Mr. Sekar, who launched a closed circuit television network at the Vadapalani Murugan Temple on Friday, said shopping malls and other commercial establishments had agreed to install surveillance cameras as a permanent security measure. Plainclothesmen had been deployed at vulnerable areas.

In another breakthrough, he said that the police arrested Mannar (48) of Saidapet and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs.10 lakh from him. Police teams investigating cases of house break in Ashok Nagar and Rangarajapuram areas picked up Mannar, an ex-convict detained under the Goondas Act on seven occasions.
