A notice directing the owner to stop work was issued by the Corporation a month ago
Demolition of the unauthorised portions of this building on Amman Koil Street, off Wall Tax Road, began on Saturday. CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), with the assistance of the Chennai Corporation, continued its drive against unauthorised constructions in north Chennai on Saturday. Workers of the civic body started demolishing the top four floors of a ground plus five-floor building on Amman Koil Street, off Wall Tax Road. It was the third such demolition in the area by the CMDA and the Corporation in the last five days. Corporation officials at the demolition site said that the second, third, fourth and fifth floors of the building were still under construction and did not have CMDA approval. “The owner had obtained planning permission last year for only the ground and first floor,” said an Assistant Engineer of the civic body. The ground floor of the building is for car parking, the first floor was planned to be used as a godown. The construction of the building, owned by one Ajith Raj, began after July 2007, the officials said. During an inspection, the authorities found that the owner had violated the rules, following which a notice directing him to stop work was issued by the Corporation a month ago. Demolition noticeThe demolition notice was issued a few days ago. When contacted, Ajith Raj confirmed that he had received the demolition notice. The demolition drive follows the CMDA and the Corporation identifying 30 illegal constructions across Chennai, 17 of which come under the control of the civic body.
