Volunteers honoured for making senior citizens’ lives dignified

CHENNAI: Ten volunteers of Dignity Foundation were honoured for their contribution to the various initiatives of the non-governmental organisation at World Elders Day celebrations in the city on Saturday.

They had assisted in various activities of the Foundation, an organisation dedicated to the welfare of the senior citizens, including manning its helpline and providing psychological counselling and companionship service to elderly persons.

Commending the efforts of the organisation, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner N.Vittal said it covered a wide spectrum of issues concerning senior citizens.

Highlighting the disappearing bond between the younger generation and the elderly, he said such organisations strived to resolve the problems of the senior citizens.

The latter must concentrate on spending their lives more productively and contribute to society.

Actor and Member of Legislative Assembly S.Ve.Shekher said that the sense of respect and bonding towards elders must be nurtured among children.

Dignity Foundation director K. Radhakrishnan spoke about the various activities of the organisation, including the dedicated helpline for aged persons in distress, computer training and publication of a monthly magazine.

The Foundation had recently launched a service, Dignity Second Careers, for the aged persons desirous to work even after retirement.

There are plans to open a dementia day care centre soon, he said. Cultural programmes by the foundation members and residents of Little Sisters of the Poor, a home for the aged, were also held as part of the celebrations.
