Centre seized of fishermen issue, says Karunanidhi

Special Correspondent

“State pursuing the matter”

CHENNAI: The government has been pursuing with the Centre the issue of attacks on fishermen of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Friday.

In a statement, he referred to news reports, particularly the one published by The Hindu, regarding the decision of External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka Rohitha Bogollogama to evolve a mechanism to resolve the issue. He was responding to observations made by some speakers at a fast organised by the Communist Party of India.

Adverting to CPI leader R. Nallakannu’s criticism of the State government on the issue, Mr. Karunanidhi said he was surprised by it.

He recalled that in April, a resolution was adopted by the Assembly calling upon the Centre to take action on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue. Not only on the Sri Lankan Tamil issue but also on any other issue, the State government had always been alert. When he had proposed the resolution, the CPI legislators did not participate in the debate. Could anyone say that the CPI members were not alert, he asked.

The Chief Minister said the response to the scheme of selling spices at subsidised rate was very good.

For the time being, they would be sold through Amudham cooperative stores.
