Appreciated: The award winners at the function organised by BSNL, Karnataka Telecom Circle, in Bangalore on Friday. Bangalore: Eighteen employees of the Karnataka Telecom Circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) were awarded State-level “Vishisht Sanchar Seva Padak” awards on Friday evening at Chowdiah Memorial Hall. The awards were handed out to different categories of the Telecom circle, for their excellence over the past year. One of the award winners, Iftequar Ahmed from Bangalore Telecom District, was awarded the “Bharat Sanchar Seva Padak” at the national-level as well. As each award was given out, the employees’ achievements and the areas in which they had excelled were elaborated upon. T.V. Srirangan, retired member of the Postal and Telegraph Board said, “I am happy that the awards have been given to members from different strata of the company.” New exchangesIn his presidential address, T.S. Kuppuswamy, Chief General Manager Telecom, Karnataka Circle, said that 2,046 rural telephone exchanges in the State would be ready by March 2009. “We are also looking at extending our bandwidth to 2 Mbps in Bangalore.” In the area of innovation, BSNL had opened E-Public Call Offices (ePCOs) — essentially broadband booths — especially in rural areas. Karnataka was also the State with the highest number of broadband connections in the country amounting to three lakhs, with another commissioned 3.3 lakh broadband ports, out of which 1.3 broadband ports had been commissioned for Bangalore. P. Raghavan, the Principal General Manager (Development), Karnataka Circle, while speaking of BSNL’s plans, said that BSNL would be bringing 3G services to the country shortly. Thirty-two cities will have the 3G service facility from then on. BSNL also has feedback windows on their websites for complaints and they would encourage face-to-face interactions with nodal officers to address complaints regarding quality control. Some of the areas in which BSNL needed to be more aggressive were in the marketing of their services — by reaching out to the doorstep of their customers. “Landlines will be stabilised as more broadband services are taken,” said Mr. Raghavan.
