Puducherry-Bangalore Garib Rath to roll shortly

J Balaji

NEW DELHI: The much awaited fully air-conditioned Puducherry-Yeshwantpur (Bangalore) tri-weekly Garib Rath Express will be inaugurated shortly and a formal nod is awaited from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu has told The Hindu.

The rakes for the train are ready, he said. The CRS inspection of the 135 km Salem-Vridhachalam section via Attur had to be carried out as the train would be operated at a speed exceeding 100 km per hour.

Though two trains, the Chennai-Salem express and the Salem-Vridhachalam passenger, were being operated on this section, the Railways wanted to ensure that all the requisite formalities should be completed before operating the high-speed train on this broad-gauge track.

“I hope all the formalities will be over in the next few days and the inauguration can be done thereafter,” he said.

Mr. Velu said the train would be widely welcomed as it connected important tourist spots and pilgrimage centres in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
