New scheme: Highways Minister M. Swaminathan inaugurating the spices and condiments distribution scheme at Uthankarai Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Krishnagiri on Friday. – KRISHNAGIRI: Water will be released from Pambar Dam after October 15 to irrigate farmlands in Uthankarai taluk in Krishnagir, Highways Minister M. Swaminathan said on Friday. Inaugurating the subsidised spices distribution scheme at Uthankarai Boys Higher Secondary School, he made the announcement when the Uthankarai Union chairman J.S.Arumugam raised the issue. Mr. Swaminathan said that Krishnagiri-Pondicherry National Highway-86 will be widened to 10 metres. The National Highways Authority had already finished the survey. The preparation of estimate was on. The Hanuman Theertham Bridge, which connects the Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts over Thenpennaiyaur will be undertaken soon. The estimate for this project has been revised from Rs. 2.5 crore to Rs. 5.5 crore. The union government’s nod was expected any time, Mr. Swaminathan added. “The previous regime is wholly responsible for the mess created because of power shortage. Nature also played spoilsport. Poor rain has affected the electricity production. To avoid hardships, the State Government was consistently in touch with the Union Government to get enough power supply from the central pool. The Opposition parties were unhappy over the success of the welfare schemes launched by the DMK Government. Those who had demolished Babari Masjid were now opposing the Sethu Canal project in the name of Ram. The project was approved by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance Government in which the DMK was a partner. The project was a dream of Annadurai. It will help enhance the economic status of the State,” Mr. Swamination added. All highway roads in Chennai, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts were made two-lanes.Mr. Swaminathan inaugurated the third phase of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Scheme. He released a booklet containing the works to be undertaken under the scheme. S. Nagarajan, Collector In charge who presided over the function said: “In our district there are 926 fair price shops run by cooperative societies. Out of these, 846 shops are provided with electronic weighing machine and the scheme will be extended to all the shops very soon. Consumers of PDS outlets were on the rise and it was 93 per cent in the district, Mr. Nagarajan added. E.G. Sugavanam, MP; T. Senguttavan, MLA; Kanchana Kamalanathan, Member, State Backward Communities Welfare Board; Vetrichelvan, former MP; Govindasamy, chairman, District Agriculture Marketing Council; G. Muniraj, District Panchayat Chairman; and Uthankarai Union chairman J.S. Arumugam spoke on the occassion. Vidya Mandir School Correspondent Chandrasekar participated. S. Jayasing Selvaraj, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Dharmapuri Zone; welcomed the gathering. V. Theagarajan, District Supply Officer, proposed a vote of thanks.
