Disaster management scheme in every village planned

Special Correspondent

Scheme envisages preparation of a map on demography for identification of vulnerable areas

VILLUPURAM: It has been proposed to put in place a disaster management scheme at every village in Villupuram district to keep stakeholders on alert and ensure timely relief and rehabilitation measures.

The scheme envisages preparation of a map on demography and natural resources for easy identification of the areas that are vulnerable to disasters, the likely extent of damage, kind of relief to be rushed there and so on, according to Collector R. Palanisamy.

In a statement here, Mr. Palanisamy said disasters were classified as natural and man-made. Earthquake, storm, cyclone, landslips, floods, tsunami, and lightning and thunder were described as natural diasasters.

Fire and road accident, mishaps caused by electricity, chemical effluents, milling crowds and subsequent stampede, riots and human bombing were classified as man-made disasters.

Nine teams

Under the scheme, it had been proposed to set up nine teams to deal with the situation.

The teams would be formed to take care of the following aspects: precautionary measures, first aid, search and rescue operation, shelter management, drinking water and sanitation, removal of the dead, counselling the victims, estimation of damage, and surveillance.

Fire Service and Rescue Department personnel and those from the Red Cross Society would give training to the team members through mock drills. Cultural events would be staged in all villages and hamlets to spread the message among the people.

Mr. Palanisamy said information and communication facilities would be set up in coastal villages to cope with the exigencies.
