Marine police stations by November
M. Balaganessin
PUDUKOTTAI: Construction of Marine police stations at Manamelkudi and Tiruppunavasal on the Pudukkottai coast is almost over. They will be declared open by November.
Personnel attached to the station will take up patrolling of the coastal areas in the district, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Coastal Security Police, Pattukottai, S. Amsavalli, said.
For each station, Rs. 25 lakh has been spent for construction of rooms for the Inspector and Sub-Inspector, and a lock-up.
Informing this on the sidelines of an awareness meeting on Thursday at Kottaipattinam, about 75 kilometres from here, on safety measures to be adopted by the fishermen while in the sea, Ms. Amsavalli said that boats would be supplied to these police stations for patrolling operation. Training was being imparted to the personnel. The boats would be brought from Kolkata, she told The Hindu.
Explaining the safety aspects to be followed by the fishermen, Ms. Amsavalli advised them to always carry their identity cards and registration documents of boats while at sea. Under no circumstances should the fishermen trespass into international waters.
Ms. Amsavalli appealed to those shifting their boats to another district to obtain anchor-permission from the local authorities. Those who had bought the boats should ensure name-transfer in the records, she said.
