SIRSI: A two-day national seminar on medicinal plants, protection and promotion will be held from Saturday at the M.M. Arts and Science College Hall, Sirsi, under the auspices of the University Grants Commission and the Modern Education Society, Sirsi. Minister for Higher Education Aravind Limbavali will inaugurate it. S. Venugopal, chairman, Karnataka State Medicinal Plant Authority, Bangalore, Nagalamba, Commissioner of Collegiate Education, will be the chief guest. V.S. Korikantimath, Director, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Goa, will deliver the keynote address. M.E.S. Shantaram Hegde Shigehalli will preside over the seminar. Medicinal plant grower Aravind Patawardhan will be felicitated. On the first day of the seminar, Lakshminarayan, ASI professor, KRC Horticulture College, Arabhavi, will speak on “Cultivation of medicinal plants”. In the afternoon session the same day, Keshav Korse, coordinator, Department of Bio-technology, SDM College, Ujire, will speak on “A practise of medicinal plant resources in healing system in India” and Narayan Bhat, executive officer, Bio-diversity Board, Bangalore, will speak on “Post harvest Technology, packing and marketing”. In the morning session on the second day, G.R. Hegde, professor of Botany, Karnatak University, Dharwad, will speak on “Medicinal Plant Diversity and their conservation”. In the afternoon session, Canara Circle Conservator of Forests M. Nagaraj Hampole will speak on “Policy Guide Lines and Role of Private Sector” and Raghavendra L., professor and research officer, Dhanvantari Ayurved College, Siddapur, will speak on “Medicinal plant-based enterprise, opportunities and challenges”. The valedictory function will be held at 4 p.m. Canara MP Anantkumar Hegde will be the chief guest.
