KADAPA: The Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi practiced truth, peace and non-violence and prisoners should draw inspiration from him and reform themselves into good citizens, incharge Joint Collector Ch. Mohan Rao said on Thursday. Speaking at the Prisoners’ Welfare Day celebrations on Kadapa Central Prison premises, he said prisoners having good conduct would get remission of sentence. He urged them to ponder over the difficulties being faced by their family members on account of their imprisonment after committing an offence in a fit of rage or otherwise. Superintendent of Police D.S. Chauhan also advised the prisoners to imbue good conduct and utilise the opportunity to get remission. He hoped that they would conduct themselves well after release. Superintendent of Kadapa Central Prison G. Veeranandan said the prison had 1,000 inmates although it has facilities to accommodate only 500 prisoners. Two new barracks were constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.20 crores to accommodate 400 prisoners, he said. A new block was also built for women prisoners from Rayalaseema districts. Proposals were forwarded urging the State government to extend Rs. 7.50 crores for beefing up security and constructing of barracks with modern facilities on Kadapa Central Prison premises, Mr. Veeranandan said. Sports competitions were conducted for prisoners and prizes given away to the winners. Land allottedFifty one prisoners were admitted to degree course on passing the entrance test conducted by B.R. Ambedkar Open University. Prisoners maintaining good conduct and completing a stipulated term of sentence would be sent to the semi-open agriculture farm jail on the recommendations of a committee, he said. The Collector allotted 3.30 acres of land to the central prison for development of the agriculture farm and allotted 200 acres for an open jail at Chintakommadinne. Efforts were on to set up a powerloom and the government was urged to sanction Rs. 13 lakhs for a brick making unit, he said. A 10-bed hospital would be built on the jail premises and a deputy surgeon, two assistant surgeons and a lab technician would be appointed, Mr. Veeranandan said. District Legal Services Authority was striving to resolve the cases of prisoners. Eight-year-old Vidyadhari of Nellore gave an enthralling dance performance. Prisoners submitted a memorandum to Mr. Mohan Rao seeking remission for those with good conduct and release on November 14. Deputy jail superintendents Rajesh and Vijaya Kumar, jailors Subrahmanyam and Ramgopal participated.
