Guwahati: A red alert has been sounded in Tripura after Wednesday night’s serial blasts in Agartala. At least 70 people were injured, several of them critically, as four blasts rocked Tripura’s capital. Agency reports said the blasts left two persons dead and about 100 injured.

The Tripura police, however, said about 25 people were injured and no death was reported.

No organisation has claimed responsibility for the blasts.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar held a meeting with the police top brass and senior officials of the Home Department.

Tripura police spokesman Nepal Das told The Hindu that the first bomb went off at Radha Nagaar at 7.30 p.m., followed by another at Gol Bazar after about five minutes.

A third blast occurred in the G.B. Blast area around 8.15 p.m., and the fourth at Krishna Nagar near Palace Compound.

A live crude bomb was recovered and defused at the main motor stand of Agartala.

Mr. Das said that till 11 p.m. no death was reported from any blast site or hospital.

The spokesman said investigations were on and the police were yet to form an opinion on who could be behind the blasts.

The injured have been admitted to the G.B. hospital.

The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) has strongly condemned the blasts and described them as an act of desperation by miscreants to create terror and disrupt the peaceful celebration of Id and Durga Puja.

Call for harmony

Gautom Das, the CPI(M) State secretariat member, said the party urged the government to bring the culprits to book. He appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.
