Crushed to death

Staff Reporter

VIRUDHUNAGAR: M. Sakthivel (35) was crushed to death while working in a stone quarry near Aruppukottai on Wednesday. Another person was injured.

The police said that a boulder from a higher level fell on Sakthivel, while he along with K. Veeranan (28), was using a compressor to drill rock. The vibration caused by the driller would have led to the accident, the police said.

Veeranan has been admitted to a private hospital in Madurai.

Protest

Around 70 residents, including 30 women, of Mettu Colony protested against a stone quarry at Kadaneri in the district, as it is posing danger to the nearby residential buildings. The people complained of higher volume of explosives being used for quarrying that caused vibration in the residential buildings, the police said.
