Id-ul-Fitr celebrated in city

FOR THE DIVINE GRACE: Muslims offering prayers at the Id-Gah organised at Marine Drive on the occasion of Id-ul-Fitr on Wednesday

KOCHI: After a month of dawn-to-dusk fasting and prayers, Muslims across the district celebrated Id-ul-Fitr (Cheriya Perunnaal) on Wednesday.

Prayers, feasts and relief activities marked the celebrations. Thousands offered Id namaz at Id-Gahs in the city and exchanged greetings.

Imams who led the prayers at the mosques exhorted the devotees to work towards ensuring communal harmony and the collective sense of humanity. Devout Muslims poured into mosques and Id-Gahs to offer prayers. Senior clerics and community elders gave the sermons.

In the city, hundreds offered prayers at the Id-Gah organised by the Greater Cochin Id-Gah Committee at Marine Drive. Janab Basheer Muhuddin, religious expert who led the prayers, urged the devotees to work towards ensuring secularism in the country. He also highlighted the need to oppose terror activities in the region.

Hundreds participated in the Id-Gah organised by the Kakkanad Id-Gah Committee. Ahamed Anas Moulavi, religious expert, led the prayers.

As part of the Fitr zakaat, kits comprising food items, new clothes and money, were distributed to the poor. Id relief was also distributed to the needy families across the district.

Political leaders and community elders, in their Id greetings, urged the people to uphold the cherished ideals of love, compassion, brotherhood and social harmony.
