PUDUKOTTAI: The need for developing good-will between police and the public was underlined by the speakers at the monthly awareness programme for sensitising college students to the role and responsibilities of police personnel, held here on Tuesday.

They said that police personnel, discharged their duty against several odds and people should extend their cooperation for maintaining law and order.

A group of 50 students from Sudharsan Engineering College at Sathyamangalam, near here, were taken around various police stations, All Woman Police station and the Armed Reserve wing as part of the awareness programme. Addressing the students, the Superintendent of Police, P. Moorthi, said this was the third phase of the programme. On the earlier occasions, students from two colleges in the town had visited the stations. The programme, he said, would go a long way in sensitising them to the tough challenges the personnel faced and helped in developing a good-will towards the personnel.

A book, titled ‘Arinthu kolga,’ authored by Mr. Moorthi, on the basic rights as well as limitations of every law-abiding citizen was released on the occasion.

The book, divided into 15 chapters, not only aimed at creating legal awareness among the students but also included the virtues the student community should develop. The Chairman of Sudharsan Engineering College, V.K. Sundaram distributed certificates to the students and said that the programme was a rare opportunity for the students to realise the difficulties of police personnel. The member of the Advisory Committee of Sahitya Akademi Thangam Murthy also spoke.

The Correspondent of Vestly Group of Educational Institutions, Aranthangi, Kanagarajan, released the book and the first copy was received by the president of Pudukottai Literary Forum, Muthu Srinivasan.
