Nagapattinam and Coimbatore register wins

Tirupur: Nagapattinam boys and Coimbatore girls opened their campaign with relatively easy wins in the Sub-junior State volleyball championship, which got underway at the Angel College of Engineering and Technology courts here on Wednesday.

Nagapattinam ousted Villupuram 25-8, 25-15 and Coimbatore dispatched Thiruvallur 25-13, 25-8.

The results:

Boys: Group A: Nagapattinam bt Villupuram 25-8, 25-15. Group B: Kancheepuram bt Namakkal 25-15, 25-11. Group C: Madurai bt Sivagangai 25-18, 17-25, 25-14. Group D: Thiruvarur bt Thiruvallur 25-12, 23-25, 25-10.

Girls: Group A: Coimbatore bt Thiruvallur 25-13, 25-8, Erode bt Madurai 25-9, 25-15. Group C: Nagapattinam bt Salem 25-19, 22-25, 25-16.

Tiruvallur in final

Tiruvallur edged out Kanyakumari 4-3 in the semifinals of the third State under-13 football championship for the PHF G.S. Rolling Trophy at the HADP Open Air Stadium in Udhagamandalam on Wednesday.

Tiruvallur will now lock horns with Sivagangai, which ousted Kancheepuram 3-0 in the final.

The results: Semifinals: Tiruvallur 4 bt Kanyakumari 3, Sivagangai 3 bt Kancheepuram 0.

Mani HSS enters final

Mani HSS (Coimbatore) and Modern SSS (Kancheepuram) entered the final of the TNCA Under-16 Inter-District Schools Cricket Tournament in Tiruchi on Wendnesday.

The scores (semifinals): Mani HSS (Coimbatore) 152 for nine in 30 overs (Srivardhan 46, Haridasan 35, Bharath Chezian 37 n.o., Gunasekaran three for 19) bt Srirangam Boys HSS 147 for nine in 30 overs (Sudhakar 49).

Modern SSS (Kancheepuram) 94 in 24.5 overs bt MSP Nadar HSS (Dindigul) 57 in 24.3 overs (Ashwath three for seven, Anand Ramanathan four for two).

Hari Nishanth on song

A healthy 245-run partnership for the opening wicket between C. Hari Nishanth (160, 191b, 19x4) and Nishanth (67) enabled host Coimbatore gain the first innings lead against Theni on the opening day of the two-day TNCA under-14 inter-district cricket pre-quarterfinal clash at the SNR Sons College grounds, Coimbatore, on Wednesday.

After bundling out the opposition cheaply for 53, the host finished the day at 254 for two. Hari and Nishanth looked strong to steer the team to a huge first innings lead but were quite unlucky to fall in the penultimate over of the day.

J. Koushik (three for 26), Rushab Bafna (three for 7) and Vignesh Karthick (three for 11) did most of the damage for the visitor.

The scores: Theni 53 in 28.5 overs (J. Koushik three for 26, Rushab Bafna three for 7, Vignesh Karthick three for 11) vs. Coimbatore 254 for two in 57.1 overs (Hari Nishanth 160, Nishanth 67).

Manoj hits century

Manoj Kumar’s unbeaten century helped Salem gain first-innings lead against Dindigul on the opening day of the TNCA under-14 inter-district cricket tournament in Dindigul on Wednesday.

The scores (pre-quarterfinals): At Nagapattinam: Vellore 50 in 23.5 overs (Raghavendran five for 10, Arun Nivas three for 16) v Nagapattinam 165 for two in 69 overs (Arun Nivas 73 n.o., Siddharth 61 n.o.).

At Dindigul: Dindigul 88 in 47.5 overs (Manikandan 32, Manikandakarthik Balaji four for 36, Sathyanarayanan three for eight) v Salem 168 for no loss in 57 overs (Manoj Kumar 103 n.o., Deepak Siddharth 51 n.o.).

At Sivaganga: Sivaganga 85 in 40 overs (Rajagopal three for 25) v Madurai 148 for three in 50 overs (Prasannavenkatesan 70, Syed Ibrahim 60 n.o.).
