HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy assured an all-party delegation led by TDP legislator Ch. Rajeswara Rao, that all possible steps would be taken by the Government to redress the grievances of the weavers of Sircilla within a week. The delegation comprising the Congress, TDP, TRS, Left parties , BJP and Praja Rajyam leaders from Sircilla met the Chief Minister and Minister for Textiles P. Sabitha Indra Reddy with a charter of demands. The leaders wanted the Government to finalise a long-term strategy by declaring Sircilla as a textile Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and design policies and programmes to integrate people in the primary production and safeguard their economic and social advancement. Piled stockThey suggested that the Government purchase the piled up stock of 1-crore metres of cloth costing about Rs. 15 crore and assure employment to all those working in the 26,000 powerlooms. The leaders said, the industry could be made viable if free and continuous power to the looms was ensured. Mr. Rajeswara Rao also urged the Government to sanction ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of the weavers who ended their lives and extend three per cent interest to the powerloom self- help societies. He said the establishment of a special State-run institution like the Tamil Nadu Co-optex was necessary to buy the produced cloth.
