PANAJI: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has expressed its displeasure over the State Government’s “sudden” decision to declare a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act on Wednesday in connection with Id-ul-Fitr, when the festival is being celebrated in Goa on Thursday. In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Digambar Kamat on Wednesday, the GCCI pointed out that the declaration of holiday had caused a lot of inconvenience to the trading and industrial community in Goa, especially because all the banking institutions will remain closed for three consecutive days. The GCCI said that the banks had remained closed on September 24 and 25 owing to the strike in the banking industry, and on September 30 on account of half-yearly closing. Cheque clearanceWith Saturday (September 27) being half-day for the banks and Sunday (September 28) being a holiday, the banks had not been able to clear the backlog of cheques. The closure of banks again on Wednesday and Thursday will further affect clearing of cheques. Since many statutory payments are to be made in the last week of September and in the first week of October, taxpayers will be penalised for non-clearance of their cheques, the GCCI pointed out. The GCCI has requested the Government to consider all these aspects before declaring holidays all of a sudden.
