Two held for robbing petrol bunk employee

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The robbery of Rs.22.31 lakh from an employee of a petrol bunk in Nazarethpet was detected on Monday. Two suspects have been apprehended and Rs.14.6 lakh recovered from them.

Police said that the incident took place on September 22 when pump operator K. Guru, was proceeding to a bank in Guindy with driver S. Sebastian alias Stephen in a jeep.

Two youths who overtook the vehicle in a motorcycle threw chilly powder on them and escaped with the money.

Chennai Suburban Commissioner of Police S.R. Jangid formed special teams led by the Ambattur Deputy Commissioner of Police B. Bala Naga Devi. It came to light that S.Chinnapparaj, brother of the jeep driver Sebastian, his nephew R.Rajkumar, who works as an assistant in a private engineering college, and friend Kasi of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh had conspired to commit the robbery.

Mr. Jangid said Sebastian, who colluded with the gang, gave information on the timing and location of the jeep. As planned, the accused committed the robbery. In a bid to avoid suspicion on Sebastian, they threw some chilly powder on him too.

Police arrested Sebastian and Rajkumar and recovered part of the robbed money from them.

A search was on to locate the two others.
