Contempt petition for failing to hold BBMP elections
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: A former mayor of Bangalore has filed a contempt petition before the Karnataka High Court saying that the authorities had invited contempt for failing to hold elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as directed by the court.
In his petition, P.R. Ramesh said a Division Bench headed by then Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph on July 2, 2008, directed the State Government to hold elections to the BBMP within three months from the date of order.
Mr. Ramesh, in his contempt petition, said the State and other authorities had wilfully disobeyed the High Court order and that they had not made any effort to hold the elections. He said though the State Election Commission several months ago had sought details on reservation of wards and delimitation, the State had not bothered to respond.
He said the wilful disobedience of High Court order amounted to contempt.
A Division Bench ordered issues of notices to the State and other respondents and adjourned further hearing of the case.
