Students spread green message School notes

BANGALORE: Students of Army Public School planted different varieties of saplings on the campus on Tuesday, the motivation being to “think green”..As part of the programme, organised by Eco-Watch and sponsored by Lions Club, students as well as teachers planted 1,200 fruit-bearing saplings.

Eco-Watch chairman Suresh Heblikar said that many of the urban issues in India were regarding the environment and they had cropped up due to lack of knowledge, awareness and planning.

A collective effort was needed to address these issues, otherwise it might be too late to save the planet.

He deplored the unplanned rampant urbanisation that was causing damage to nature. “The water-table is receding, rivers are drying up and the average temperature is going up. If we do not swing into action now, future generations will be deprived of a good life,” he said.

Mr. Heblikar commended the initiative taken by the school and said that such programmes would help restore the eco-system. “Trees give us oxygen and also help recharge the water-table. Hence, there is a need to organise more such programmes,” he said.

District Governor of Lions Club K. Vamsidhar Babu said that the organisation was working closely with schools to create awareness among students on environment-related issues.

Principal Manjula Raman said that the school intended to bring back the greenery on its campus. “Due to some construction activity, we had lost our green cover. Plans are afoot to enhance the beauty of the campus by taking initiatives like this. We already have a herbal garden. These fruit-bearing saplings will be tended by the students themselves,” she said.

Brigadier P.S. Ravindranath, chairman of the school management committee, also participated in the programme.

National Sports Day

Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra, Thanisandra, observed National Sports Day. It marks the birthday of Dhyan Chand, who is known as the “wizard of hockey”.

Faculty member Dakanachar spoke on the significance of the day and said that the Dhayn Chand-led Indian hockey team created history at the 1932 Berlin Olympics. Adolf Hitler witnessed one of the matches and offered to make Dhyan Chand a field marshal if he played for Germany.

However, Dhyan Chand refused the offer. Inter-house throw ball and netball matches were held as part of the event. Prerana House emerged victorious.

Prathibha Karanji

Ganga International School hosted the Mallasandra cluster-level Prathibha Karanji competition recently. Students from classes 1 to 10 participated in various competitions such as singing, clay modelling, drawing and paper craft. Prizes were distributed to the winners.

They will participate in the taluk-level competition which will be held in October.
