Engineers should develop design capability, BBMP Commissioner

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner S. Subramanya on Tuesday called upon engineers to develop design capability, innovate and study latest construction technologies.

Speaking at a function organised by BBMP Engineers’ Welfare Sangha to mark Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s 148 birth anniversary, the Commissioner said the important characteristic of an engineer was his design capability.

Unfortunate

“But unfortunately this is no longer the hallmark of engineers these days. People do not need engineers to construct their houses now. They are happy to get it done by a mason. This is an unfortunate trend,” he said.

Civil engineering expert and IISc. professor K.S. Subbarao, who spoke about Sir M.V.’s honesty, integrity and workmanship, said present day engineers were not sure whether structures designed by them would last for three years at least.

“The KRS dam designed and built by Sir M.V. is intact even after 100 years. But there are several dams built recently whose construction is already showing signs of damage,” he said.
