Anand slips

NAGPUR: For the first time since January 1997, World championViswanathan Anand finds himself out of the top-three bracket in world rankings.

As per the latest rankings effective from Wednesday, Anand occupied the fifth spot, behind Bulgaria’s Veselin Topalov, Russia’s Alexander Morozevich, Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk and Norwegian sensation Magnus Carlsen.

Topalov regained the coveted place by reaching 2791.

Anand lost 15 points in the Grand Slam Final at Bilbao earlier this month. This brought Anand’s rating down from 2798 to 2783 and made him vacate the top slot.

In fact, Kramnik, too, lost 16 points in the last quarter to occupy the sixth spot.

Among the leading Indians, K. Sasikiran gained 10 points and moved three places up to be 35th in the world while P. Hari Krishna lost nine points and slipped nine places to be 62nd.

In India’s top-10 list, 15-year-old Parimarjan Negi was the biggest gainer in the last three months. He collected 68 points for a career-high rating of 2597 and occupied the sixth spot.
