Barnala calls for unity

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and leaders of political parties have extended Ramzan greetings to the Muslims.

Mr Barnala said: “On the happy occasion of Ramzan, I convey my heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my Muslim brothers and sisters. Let the festival rekindle the spirit of unity and brotherhood and promote peace and prosperity.”

In his message, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said that after the month-long prayers that purified both body and the soul, the Muslims would celebrate Ramzan on Wednesday and the State Government extended its greetings to them. The government had introduced several welfare measures for the community since 1969.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said that during the month of Ramzan, the Muslims do three important things: praying, fasting and helping the poor. The aim of the Ramzan prayers was to make one understand the condition of those unable to get anything to eat. “Let this day bring prosperity and peace to all Muslims,” she said.

S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, said his party had always backed reservation for the Muslims.

S.Thirunavukkarasar, BJP MP, said: “On this auspicious day, let the spirit of brotherhood grow, communal harmony be protected and the Muslims be blessed with wealth and prosperity.”

Union Minister G.K.Vasan said: “Let us all pledge not to provide any chance to terrorism and communalism and protect the country’s unity in diversity and take the country on the path of progress.”

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu said everyone should strive to create a terrorism-free country. Vijaykanth, founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, said quality education, employment and loans for self-employment for the development of the Muslims were the main principles of his party.
