T.R. Baalu VILLUPURAM: The socio-economic cost of road accidents has entailed huge losses to the country and if these were averted, it would enhance development, Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu has said. He was speaking at a function organised here on Monday to inaugurate the Villupuram bypass road constructedat the cost of Rs.60 crore. Mr. Baalu said that during 2006, a total of 4.6 lakh road accidents occurred across the country, killing 1,05,749 people and injuring close to five lakh people. On an average, there was one accident every minute and one death every five minutes on the roads. According to statistics, monetary losses on account of road accidents due to injuries and fatality during 1999–2000 were said to be Rs.55,000 crore. It amounted to three per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). As such, if the number of accidents were reduced, the economy of the country might grow at a fast pace, he said. Mr. Baalu noted that important road corridor connecting Chennai and Tiruchi was traversing through five districts of Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Perambalur and Tiruchi. The four-laning project envisaged four bypasses at Tindivanam, Villupuram, Ulundurpet and Samayapuram. In these sectors, there would be 16 high-level bridges, six subways, five overbridges and nine rail-overbridges. Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy requested Mr. Baalu to develop the 65-km Villupuram–Thiruvannamalai Road. Union Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathi said that based on his request Mr. Baalu had sanctioned Rs.923 crore for the Ulundurpet-Salem road project. Collector R. Palanisamy, MP Ginjee Ramachandran, and MLAs S. Pushparaj, Ganapathi, T. Udhayasuryan, Thirunavukkarsu and A.Angayarkanni participated.
