Tirupur plans library for poor students

Focus on education: Facilities at Corporation-run schools in Tirupur to be agumented. –

Tirupur: The Corporation of Tirupur plans to establish a library for economically backward students in a central location in the city and augment the facilities at four of its schools, at an outlay of Rs. 9.95 crore.

The project is aimed to improve the quality of education in the government sector and thereby enthuse the downtrodden to pursue higher education beyond the school level.

The works, to be taken up shortly, will be competed during the next financial year.

City Engineer K. Gauthaman told The Hindu that the project cost would be borne by the administration from the corpus created under the head ‘elementary educational fund.’ The proposed library, coming up at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh, would be equipped with text books, reference periodicals and guides for competitive examinations, to help students from indigent families prepare for higher studies.

“We are in the process of finalising the site for the library,” Mr. Gauthaman said.

Regarding infrastructure improvement at Corporation-run schools, Mayor K. Selvaraj said that an additional three-storeyed block with 33 classrooms and six toilets would be established at Jaiva Bhai Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School at a cost of Rs. 2.4 crore.

Similarly, new blocks would come up at Kumar Nagar Corporation High School (which will have 13 classrooms), Palaniammal Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School (24 classrooms) and Nanjappa Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School (24 classrooms). An auditorium with Galvanised Iron (GI) sheet roof, to seat 5,000 people, would be constructed at Jaiva Bhai Girls Higher Secondary Schoolat a cost of Rs. 1 crore.
