Heavy security for cricket match

Staff Reporter

Australian team arriving today

HYDERABAD: A heavy security cover will be thrown around the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Uppal during the four-day cricket match between Board President’s eleven and the Australian team starting from October 2. The Ricky Ponting led team is slated to arrive on Monday evening.

The security measures might well resemble an international match and the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) officials justify them amidst the backdrop of the recent blasts and a directive from the BCCI. “The Australians will have a heavily-armed escort from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the venue on all four days,” said HCA Joint Secretary, D.S. Chalapathi.

HCA officials held a detailed meeting with the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate officials on Sunday to prepare for an incident free match. Already, a police outpost has been functioning from the stadium and unauthorised persons are not being allowed inside.

Tickets

About 500 police personnel would be deployed and spectators would be allowed only from one Gate – No. 4 or the Devender Goud entrance. Tickets have been priced at Rs. 100 a day. “About 8,000 tickets have been printed and each spectator will have to undergo thorough screening and avoid getting any bags or tiffin boxes,” he said.
