SIFTING THROUGH: Police personnel inspecting gadgets and foreign currency ash recovered from a vehicle on Anna Salai on Sunday. Chennai: A total of 54 mobile phones of Korean make, 11 iPods, several memory cards and foreign currencies were seized from a vehicle on Anna Salai early on Sunday. The police said Jahubar (45) of Arumugam Street, Triplicane, and his friend Jamal Moideen (43) of Nungambakkam were travelling in the vehicle when a night patrol team intercepted it around 3 a.m. near the Anna statue. When the duo did not stop, the police team pursued the vehicle and brought it to a halt after a distance. The two men were apprehended and an inspection of the vehicle revealed various foreign currency notes, including that of the U.S., Hong Kong, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India. According to S. Lakshmi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane), the goods belonged to Jahubar, who didn’t possess any valid documents for their purchase. Investigation is under way to ascertain the origin of the seized goods. Weapons seizedIn another vehicle check near R.V. Nagar and Kilpauk Garden Road junction in the early hours of Sunday, the police intercepted an autorickshaw and found some weapons inside. According to the police, those travelling in the vehicle escaped. A check of the abandoned vehicle revealed that there were weapons inside. The police are trying to trace the owner of the autorickshaw.
