Woman dies after sterlisation procedure
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: A 32-year-old woman, Thulasi, who was brought to the Government Maternity Hospital in Egmore died within 10 minutes of admission on Saturday night.
A resident of Guduvanchery, she was brought to the hospital by her brother Kumar after she developed complications following a family planning procedure at the Primary Health Centre in Guduvanchery around noon on Saturday.
Thulasi, wife of Jayaraman (34), a painter, had delivered a baby girl on Friday at a private hospital in the suburban area. She was then taken to the PHC for the sterilisation procedure on Saturday. The couple have a seven-year-old girl too.
According to Mr. Kumar, a few hours after the procedure she developed seizures and her condition worsened. The family decided to take her to the Government Maternity Hospital in the city.
A senior official at the hospital in Egmore said the patient was brought around 9 p.m. “Within ten minutes of her being brought into the casualty, she died. We could not start any resuscitation programme on her,” she said.
The Guduvanchery police have registered a case under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code based on a complaint filed by Mr. Kumar.
