Hyderabad
Solution for urban flooding sought
Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD: Commissioner of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) S. P. Singh on Sunday stressed on the need to push for incentive-driven economics while taking up conservation projects in twin cities. He called upon urban planners to come out with a solution for urban flooding, whenever it rains heavily in Hyderabad.
Participating in the inaugural function of a workshop on conservation of river Musi, organised to mark the centenary of 1908 floods of Musi by Institute of Town Planners of India (ITPI), Mr. Singh felt that public should be given incentives to take up conservation. “We should encourage them to conserve by giving them incentives like cuts in property tax. Such a system should be worked-out,” he felt.
The GHMC Commissioner pointed out that the present situation of river Musi was a collective failure and everyone should take equal responsibility for its present fate. “Carriageway leading up to Musi has been encroached by all sides due to heavy construction activity. We should work seriously to develop the river front,” he said.
Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) Commissioner K.S. Jawahar Reddy, town planning officials from GHMC, conservation architects, office bearers of ITPI and representatives of several NGOs were present in the one-day workshop.
